Published for the 20th anniversary of the Beijing massacre in 2009. this book was immediately banned by the Chinese regime. Unlike most histories of the tumultuous events of 1989, this book argues that this was a revolutionary movement which tragically lacked a clear programme and leadership equal to the task of bringing down the CCP dictatorship. Many lessons of these events have been obscured, such as the critical role of the working class which took important steps towards self-organisation and actually suffered far greater repression than the students after Deng Xiaoping’s brutal crackdown.
